€100,000 Funding to Upgrade Shopfronts and Street Facades in Newtownmountkennedy

Deputy Steven Matthews, Green Party TD for Wicklow, has said that the new fund to upgrade and restore shopfronts, install artwork and murals, and plant trees, flowers and shrubbery in Newtownmountkennedy is a huge boost for the local area.

Speaking following the announcement of the Streetscape Enhancement Initiative by the Department of Rural and Community Development, Deputy Matthews said:

“I am delighted that Newtownmountkennedy has been selected by Wicklow County Council for the Streetscape Enhancement Initiative. Local businesses and community groups will be able to apply for funding to develop the public realm of this beautiful North Wicklow village. The funding can be used for a variety of projects including to upgrade and restore shopfronts, plant trees and flower boxes, paint murals and artwork and to install new street furniture and canopies.

“I would encourage as many businesses and community organisations as possible to get involved in this initiative and come up with new ideas to make Newtownmountkennedy a vibrant and sustainable place to live. The Fund will be managed by Wicklow County Council and applications will open over the coming weeks.

“The Streetscape Enhancement Initiative builds on the Green Party’s Town Centres First policy which aims to bring life and vibrancy back to our rural towns and villages across Ireland. I hope that if this round of funding is successful, that it will be possible to include other towns and villages in the coming years.

“If any local groups or business owners would like assistance with their projects or grant applications, I would encourage them to get in touch with me directly and I would be happy to offer any support I can”, Deputy Matthews concluded.
