€594,000 in Funding for Outdoor Recreation in Wicklow – Matthews

Green TD Steven Matthews has welcomed the allocation of additional funding to improve outdoor recreation facilities in Wicklow.

Speaking following the announcement, Deputy Matthews said:

“Wicklow did really well under the latest round of funding from the Department of Rural and Community Development. Three projects were selected which aim to enable both residents and visitors to explore the beautiful natural environment that we have here in Wicklow. A total of €594,000 has been allocated to projects including enhanced car parking and repairs to trail surfaces at Glenmalure, the construction of a bridge across Three Trouts Stream in Delgany and an extended loop walk taking in Tinahely Village.

“Outdoor recreation infrastructure allows us to explore our immediate surroundings and develop a real connection to nature. This is important not only for our health and wellbeing, but for raising awareness of the need to protect and restore our natural environment. The Government’s Our Rural Future strategy recognises the role of outdoor amenities in supporting the sustainable development of rural communities. This is a key priority for the Green Party which we have consistently delivered on throughout our time in Government.

“This latest round of funding is for smaller-scale projects, and I expect further funding later this year for larger-scale projects such as walking trails. I have worked on potential projects with Wicklow County Council and will continue to ensure that Wicklow gets a fair assessment in these funding decisions. If you have any ideas or suggestions on outdoor recreation improvements for Wicklow, please get in touch and I would be happy to discuss them directly”, Deputy Matthews concluded.
