Green TD Steven Matthews has welcomed progress on introducing a contactless payment system that will include phone or card tap payments on DART and bus services. The National Transport Authority (NTA) recently appointed a contractor to design a new ticketing system to bring our public transport network in line with other EU countries. The project will take time to design and implement but this move represents a significant step in the process. Discussing the announcement, Deputy Matthews said:
“I am delighted that the NTA has advanced proposals to allow contactless payments on bus and rail services. We need to incentivise the use of public transport by making it accessible for everyone. The roll-out of contactless payments will make it easier and more convenient for people to take DART and bus services in Wicklow. It will also have the benefit of reducing journey times for passengers.
“We have taken a significant step forward in the roll-out of contactless payments on DART, bus, and rail services. While it will take some time to see the new system introduced on all public transport services, I welcome that a contractor has been appointed to advance this project. I look forward to working with the NTA to progress this project as it moves to design stage.”
“The progress on a contactless payment system is welcome as my work continues to bring the DART to Wicklow Town. My engagements with Irish Rail and the Department of Transport are progressing positively and I will continue to do all I can to ensure this game changing project becomes reality for Wicklow Town commuters. If anyone has any questions in relation to this project or any other transport issue, please drop me an email and I will help in any way I can,” Deputy Matthews concluded.
