Deputy Steven Matthews has welcomed the provision of €1,279,015 in funding to enhance road access to farms and homes in rural areas of Wicklow. The Department of Rural and Community Development announced its highest-ever nationwide allocation for the Local Improvement Scheme (LIS) earlier this week. Speaking following the announcement of this funding to improve local roads and laneways, Deputy Matthews said:

“This funding is essential to improving and maintaining road access to rural farms and homes in Wicklow. It will enable necessary repairs to be carried out on non-public roads that are usually not included under local authority road maintenance. This will provide support to homeowners and farmers who would otherwise be solely responsible for paying these costs.
“This funding underlines the Government’s commitment to improving road safety in rural areas. It is important that we continue to protect and renew our road network in Wicklow so that it doesn’t fall into a state of disrepair or neglect that would be hazardous for all road users. We can do this while maintaining our commitment to a 2:1 expenditure ratio between public transport infrastructure and active travel investment compared to roads spending.
“In addition to funding for local and regional roads announced earlier this year, there has been record funding for walking and cycling schemes and unprecedented funding in rural bus services in Wicklow. This investment is essential to transforming our transport infrastructure in Wicklow and enabling a transition to active modes of travel”, Deputy Matthews concluded.
