Green TD Steven Matthews has welcomed the opening of applications to the Free Travel Scheme Extension which will provide free public transport to those certified as medically unfit to drive. The extension to the scheme was a key measure included in Budget 2024 aimed at addressing the transport difficulties often experienced by those diagnosed with epilepsy and other conditions. Speaking following the opening of applications for this expanded scheme from the Department of Social Protection, Deputy Matthews said:
“I am delighted that the Free Travel Scheme is now open for applications. I have engaged with a number of people and families impacted by epilepsy and other conditions, and I previously engaged directly with the Minister for Transport and the Minister for Social Protection as well as Epilepsy Ireland on this issue.
“Lack of access to transport is an issue that particularly impacts the epilepsy community and can result in difficulties in attending the workplace and participating in social activities. There are an estimated 1,125 people living with epilepsy in Wicklow and I hope that this measure will directly benefit many of these individuals and their families. I would encourage all those who are eligible to apply for the scheme before it commences on 29th July.
“This is a hugely important initiative which will combat social isolation and support people diagnosed with epilepsy and other conditions to attend school, work and social activities. If anyone has any questions regarding the Free Travel Pass Scheme or supports for people living with epilepsy, please drop me an email and I will provide any assistance that I can”, concluded Deputy Matthews.
