Funding for Outdoor Adventure Projects in Wicklow

Date: 4 August 2022

Green TD Steven Matthews has welcomed the extra funding announced today for Wicklow for outdoor recreation and adventure projects.

‘Wicklow did really well under the latest round of funding from Minister Heather Humphreys department. 10 projects were selected across the county which aim to improve beautiful parts of our county for visitors and residents to enjoy.’

‘Wicklow received €280,000 for projects across the country including restoration of granite stonework for Aughrim Heritage, the Avonmore Way, a looped equestrian trail in Ballyboy forest, and an extension to the river walk in the Devils Glen. Also receiving funding were a linear play area on the Red Kite Loop, improved access points to Coillte land in West Wicklow, resurfacing works on the Miners Way and funding to airlift restoration materials to sensitive Wicklow upland areas’.

‘In the recent public consultation on the Outdoor Recreation Strategy I submitted that good access to the outdoors is critical for us to enjoy our beautiful natural environment and that this access can foster a real understanding and respect for our natural world and the threats that exist and the fragility of our biodiversity and habitats. I am also of the view that our wild and beautiful outdoors in Wicklow is for residents to enjoy as well as visitors. It is important that we provide well managed and accessible locations to support our tourism offering but also to provide for our residents and locals that visit these places all year around.

'This latest round of funding is for smaller scale projects and I expect further funding later this year for larger scale projects and walking trails. I am working on a few potential projects for Wicklow with Wicklow County Council and will continue to ensure that the Garden County gets a fair assessment in these funding considerations. If you have any ideas or suggestions on outdoor recreation improvements for Wicklow please get in touch and I would be happy to help,’ concluded Deputy Matthews.
