Steven Matthews TD has written to the NTA and Irish Rail seeking a meeting ahead of the new rail timetable review to provide an improved weekend train service for Greystones.
‘the service to Greystones is inadequate’ said Matthews ‘and its unacceptable for a town of its size that there is a only an hourly service on Saturday and Sundays.’
‘I was extremely disappointed that the previous rail timetable published in December 2023 failed to the improve the service and I am strongly pushing for this review to create a 30 minute service at appropriate times at the weekend. The hourly service is just not good enough for the residents and visitors to Greystones. It not good for business either and if we want to get more people onto public transport then the service needs to be reliable, affordable and frequent. We have cut rail fares by 50% for younger people and 20% for all users, there are 185 new DART carriages under order for delivery over the next two years and a further 415 within the order framework. The new circulating Greystones town bus and extra services will commence soon. The bus and rail companies are recruiting and training drivers and maintenance people which has been one of the challenges in the delivery of extra public transport services. The improvement of the weekend service to Greystones is also an important step to provide people with an alternative to car dependency. There is ongoing work on the delivery of the DART extension to Wicklow which will be a game changer for residents of Wicklow Town and Kilcoole and will also provide better transport options for Greystones to Wicklow.’
‘I would urge residents and business to support my efforts to improve the weekend service and overall reliability of the Greystones DART by contacting me and participating in the public consultation on the rail timetable review’ concluded Deputy Matthews
