Matthews Calls for increased capacity on Blessington 65 Bus Route

Green TD Steven Matthews has written to both Dublin Bus and the National Transport Authority (NTA) to seek a review of the existing 65 Bus service following reports by many passengers that it is operating at overcapacity. This route runs between Dublin City Centre and Blessington, 15 times daily Monday – Friday, 12 times on Saturdays and 10 journeys on Sunday.

Discussing his calls to increase capacity. Deputy Matthews said:

“In recent weeks I have been contacted by a number of residents in Blessington, who rely on this service, reporting increasing capacity issues on the 65 Dublin Bus route. This included overcrowding on buses and occasionally full buses passing them by. As this is already a relatively infrequent route, having a bus pass you by could leave you stranded for over an hour – the last thing someone needs after a long day in work or worse, causing them to miss appointments.

“Blessington is experiencing population growth with new houses and estates being built. We need joined up thinking here in terms of providing basic services like a frequent and reliable bus route that has the capacity to accommodate the increasing demand.

“I have written to Dublin Bus and the NTA to ask that an urgent review is conducted to assess the demand for an increased and improved service and to address the existing overcapacity issues that have been reported by a huge number of regular passengers on this route.

“I will continue to push for improved and new services for Wicklow to reduce car reliance and offer people a genuine alternative for work and recreation”, concluded Deputy Matthews.
