Matthews: Deposit and Return Scheme Reduces Plastic Litter in Wicklow

Green TD Steven Matthews has welcomed a massive reduction in litter on beaches in Wicklow and across the country following the launch of the Deposit and Return Scheme in February. According to the annual Coastwatch survey of 250 beaches across Ireland, there has been a significant decline in the number of plastic bottles, aluminium cans, and steel tins on Irish shores.

Discussing the success of the Deposit and Return scheme, Deputy Matthews said:

“I am delighted to see that there has been a major reduction in litter on Irish beaches. The Deposit and Return Scheme has been a fantastic success in reducing the amount of litter in our public spaces. Over 500 million drinking cans and bottles have been returned since the launch of the initiative in February.

“Already we are seeing the positive impacts of the scheme with cleaner streets, parks, and beaches in our local communities across Wicklow. I am very pleased that more than fifty retailers are participating in the scheme in Wicklow. I want to thank everyone for playing their part by returning their drinking bottles and cans and helping us to create a cleaner and healthier local environment.

“The Deposit and Return Scheme has been a major step forward in our transition to a circular economy. The Green Party have led on this initiative in Government. Our aim is to reduce levels of plastic litter and increase rates of recycling in every community across Ireland. If anyone has any questions or would like further information relating to the scheme, please don’t hesitate to contact my office and I will provide any support that I can”, Deputy Matthews concluded.
