Matthews encourages Participation in National Bike Week 2023

Green TD Steven Matthews is encouraging people to get involved with the many events taking place across Wicklow as part of National Bike Week 2023 Which is taking place from the 13th- 24th of May. The week will see a packed schedule of events devoted to cycling happening all over the county.

Speaking about the week of events, Deputy Matthews said:

“National Bike Week is always a hugely enjoyable and exciting week for all involved and this year’s instalment promises to be the best yet. I am delighted to see that Wicklow County Council is going all out for this year’s festival by offering a diverse range of events for cyclists of all ages and abilities. Events include group cycles, bike repair workshops and cycling tours. I am particularly encouraged that there will be a number of bicycle training classes will be held throughout the week to help beginners get on the saddle. I hope that events like this will help encourage more people in Wicklow to take up cycling either as a hobby or as an alternative to car travel.

“The Green Party has always led the way in encouraging and providing for the use of bicycles as a practical and worthwhile alternative. Since getting into Government, it has been my priority and the priority of my colleagues to secure the provision of safe cycling routes. There have already been many provided for in Wicklow and I will continue to work with Wicklow County Council to continue this work These facilities ensure safe passage for school children and other commuters on their travels by bike and scooter.

“We know that cycling is an environmentally sustainable way of travelling however it is also a fun solo or family activity which can be enjoyed by all ages as well as a wonderful way of keeping fit and healthy. We in Wicklow are particularly fortunate to be home to some of the more beautiful landscapes in the country and there no better way to explore the incredible sights which Wicklow has to offer than on a bicycle. I look forward to seeing the next generation of cyclist take to the lanes the National Bike Week, Deputy Matthews concluded.
