Matthews Encourages Public Participation in Biodiversity Programme for Brittas Bay

Green Party TD Steven Matthews is inviting members of the public to participate in the ‘Behind the Beach’ Biodiversity Programme for Brittas Bay. Wicklow County Council has organised a series of events and workshops over the coming months to raise awareness of the ecological importance of Wicklow’s coastal areas and to assist individuals to develop skills in conservation activities.

“This is an incredibly positive initiative that celebrates the rich plant and animal life of our marine environment in Wicklow. As a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) under the management of Wicklow County Council, Brittas Bay is the ideal location for a biodiversity awareness programme. As well as its significance for biodiversity, the sand dunes of Brittas Bay play a vital role in developing resilience against climate change. The events planned over the following months include a session on butterfly identification, a migrant bird field outing and workshop, a clean-up of the dunes and a nature walk.

“I would encourage everyone who is interested in exploring the wildlife and habitats of Brittas Bay to register their interest for one or more of the events by emailing wicklowheritage@wicklowcoco.ie. The events are organised by ALC Nature in association with Wicklow County Council and are supported by funding through the National Parks and Wildlife Service’s (NPWS) National Biodiversity Action Plan. Further information can be found on the website of Wicklow County Council.

“The Green Party are fully committed to protecting and enhancing Ireland’s unique biodiversity and natural heritage. Through a new Strategic Action Plan, we have increased funding for the NPWS by €55 million over the next three budgetary cycles. At a local level, I am currently seeking the appointment of a full-time Biodiversity Officer to Wicklow County Council. If anyone has questions about the Biodiversity Programme for Brittas Bay or the Government’s policies on biodiversity protection and conservation please get in touch with me directly and I will offer any support I can”, Deputy Matthews concluded.
