Matthews: Record Level Grants for Wicklow Based Animal Welfare Charities

Green TD Steven Matthews has welcomed the announcement of grant funding of €340,775 to be split between five Wicklow based animal welfare charities. Commitments on increasing the level of funding for these organisations were secured by the Green Party before entering Government and this year’s funding represents an increase of €17,000 (5.3%) compared to the last year and is part of the largest ever annual funding for this sector.

This year’s funding was broken down as follows:

·        Ash Animal Rescue - €64,250

·        Arklow Cat Rescue - €5,875

·        Irish Horse Welfare Trust - €136,900

·        Milo's Mission Rescue - €10,000

·        Wicklow SPCA - €123,750

Discussing the funding, Deputy Matthews said:

“Animal welfare is a priority for the Green Party, and we have always led on this issue. This funding will enable these animal welfare charities in Wicklow to continue their crucial work preventing animal cruelty and protecting vulnerable animals.

“Both as a County Councillor and now as a TD, I have been fortunate enough to see the incredible work that these animal welfare organisations do on the ground, and I know that this funding will be put to good use.

We are particularly fortunate in Wicklow to have a strong, active voluntary sector dedicated to animal welfare. The staff and volunteers from the organisations in receipt of funding show incredible commitment to protecting and caring for surrendered, abandoned and at-risk animals.

The Green Party will continue to prioritise animal welfare supports and I look forward to working alongside my colleague, Minister Pippa Hackett and engaging closely with animal welfare organisations as we strive to improve Ireland’s record on animal welfare, concluded Deputy Matthews.
