Matthews welcomes Coillte Repairs Fund for Wicklow Forest Trails

Green Party TD has welcomed the announcement of over €140,000 to carry out 15 upgrade projects on walking and hiking trails in Wicklow under projects to be administered by Coillte under the Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme. This will include repairs to existing trails, repairs of signage and a general focus on improving safety for all those who use these amenities throughout the year.

Discussing the funding, Deputy Matthews said:

“I work with Coillte on a range of issues, and it is very welcome to see this fund coming to fruition to carry out necessary repairs, upgrades, and safety features for many of the incredible walking and hiking trails in the county.

“We are incredibly fortunate in Wicklow to have so many of these amenities on our doorstep and it is vital that we maintain them so that locals and tourists alike can enjoy nature while still limiting our impact on the surrounds. I think the pandemic period solidified how lucky we are in many people’s minds, and I hope that this funding will go some way to encouraging more people to explore their own county.

“The funding is part of a 5-year strategic partnership between the Department of Rural and Community Development and Coillte and I look forward to working with both groups on the provision of these upgrades for Wicklow and I hope to see them put in place as soon as possible. If anybody wants to discuss the specific projects being funded under this project, I would encourage them to contact me directly, concluded Deputy Matthews.
