Matthews welcomes COVID-19 Stability Funding for Wicklow Community Groups

Date: 5 October 2020

Green Party TD for Wicklow Steven Matthews TD has welcomed the news that Carnew Community Care and Purple House Cancer Support Centre have received €41,750 and €49,145 respectively in the latest announcement from his Green Party colleague, Minister of State with responsibility for Community Development and Charities, Joe O’Brien TD. Discussing the announcement, Deputy Matthews said:

“The ongoing Covid-19 pandemic has hit all of us extremely hard in different ways and often in ways you may not consider. The impact that it has had on community groups and services is immeasurable and any support that the Government can offer at this challenging time is extremely welcome.

“The funding from the Dormant Accounts Fund, which is where these latest grants have come from, is designed to support community and voluntary organisations, charities and social enterprises that are experiencing financial difficulties as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The two Wicklow groups that received funding on this occasion do incredible work in the community and are extremely deserving of this Government support. This funding will, in the constraints of Covid, help them to continue to make these contributions.

“I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those involved in not only these groups but all groups that have worked tirelessly to continue their vital services through the Covid-19 period. I have been fortunate as both a County Councillor and now as a TD to engage with some of these organisations and I have seen first-hand the work that work they do, and it is incredible. I look forward to having the opportunity to continue meeting with volunteers and organisers, albeit virtually, in the coming weeks and months to discuss their plans”, concluded Deputy Matthews.
