Matthews Welcomes Progress of Proposed on Hop On/Hop Off Bus Service in Wicklow Town

Green TD Steven Matthews has welcomed the commitment of the National Transport Authority (NTA) to progress their review of his proposal to create a new circulating bus service in Wicklow Town which would provide a much-needed service and reduce reliance on cars. The NTA has undertaken preliminary studies of the town and identified areas of the town that would benefit from increased local public transport. This follows a series of meetings Deputy Matthews carried out with residents and community groups regarding the need to improve public transport options in Wicklow Town.

“I was delighted to receive confirmation from the NTA that my proposal for a circulating route is still under active consideration. I have met with senior officials within the NTA previously and put forward a proposed route which was designed in conjunction with the Wicklow Town Active Retired group. This would significantly improve public transport in the town and give locals a genuine alternative to hopping in the car.

“Wicklow is a growing urban town which urgently needs to be prioritised for public transport upgrades and I am working directly with the NTA and the Minister for Transport on increasing capacity and options for public transport for Wicklow – the key project being bringing the DART to Wicklow Town. This work is progressing well and while there is a huge amount of work to do to bring this service into operation, I expect it to be in place within the next three years.

“If we really want people to drive less, to cut emissions and improve road safety we need to provide better public transport and that is one of my priorities and I am committed to delivering more for Wicklow,” concluded Deputy Matthews.
