Matthews welcomes rural funding for 2 Wicklow projects

Date: 30 August 2020

Green Party TD, Deputy Steven Matthews was speaking following the €72,500 funding announcement for two Wicklow projects as part of the Government’s Our Rural Future plan. The two projects funded were Asknagap Community Project’s application for Astroturf and Knockananna Youth Project’s application for pitch flood lighting. Discussing the announcement, Deputy Matthews said:

“The two funding announcements for Asknagap and Knockananna are very positive and will be welcome additions to the areas. I know significant work went into the funding applications so I would like to commend all those involved for helping to improve the community facilities.

“Minister Heather Humphreys has confirmed that future funding under the same programme is imminent and I look forward to working with her in the coming weeks in advance of the announcement.

“The importance of available, year-round sporting facilities was made clear during the pandemic and the focus on outdoor facilities in this round of funding that will ensure community access throughout the dark winter nights going forward is very positive.

“One of the key commitments that the Green Party worked hard on ensuring was in the Programme for Government was ensuring consistent and future proofed investment over the lifetime of the Government in our rural communities and this funding is just the latest round of funding as part of the wider plan to invest and reinvigorate rural Wicklow.

“I look forward to continuing to work with both my Green Party and Government colleagues to ensure that further funding will be forthcoming for a wide variety of initiatives across Wicklow in the coming months/years. I would be more than happy to meet with any Wicklow group/organisation to discuss funding applications and I would ask anyone involved to get in touch and we can arrange a meeting.
