Over €3.5 million for Wicklow Community Groups

Green TD – Steven Matthews has welcomed the announcement of over €3.5 million for Wicklow Section 38/39 Community Groups that operate with the support of the Department of Health. This support was announced under the Government’s Inflation Fund which is designed to support these groups with cost increases in running their operation. Discussing the funding, Deputy Matthews said:

“I am fortunate to be in a position where I get to meet with community Section 38/39 groups across Wicklow on a regular basis to discuss their vital role in the community. Unfortunately, one of the frequent things raised with me as a huge concern is the cost of energy and the impact it is having on these groups in how they can operate.

“The funding announced under the Inflation Fund is hugely welcome and has been targeted at groups that operate health and living supports for people including vital services such as Wicklow Meals on Wheels, Purple House Cancer Support and the Bray Community Addiction Team amongst other vital support groups across Wicklow.

“Voluntary organisations play absolutely vital roles in providing frontline services to the most vulnerable in our society: people with disabilities, older people, those suffering from addiction, mental health problems and life-limiting illnesses.

“The work that these groups do is extraordinary, and it is hugely positive to see this targeted funding announced at a time that so many of them vitally need intervention to help cover their day-to-day running costs. I will be writing to each of the recipients of this found of funding in the coming days to offer my support to ensure there are no teething issues in terms of drawing down this funding and to provide any further assistance that I can”, concluded Deputy Matthews.
